Do Not Disturb with Brendan Fallis
Presenting Do Not Disturb, a series uncovering the oasis behind closed doors. We’ve been invited to the homes of indoor enthusiasts—and you’re our plus one. In the next installment, digital creator Brendan Fallis welcomes us to his historic New York City haven, grounded in the functionality of Thuma design.
What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Do Not Disturb?”
BF: I'm a big lighting guy, so at night you can really get a vibe in here. It feels like our little escape and hotel room in our own home.

How do you wake up in the morning?
BF: My children get me out of bed in the morning, if that is an honest answer. I like to think that every day is going to be a great day and a new day. There's a lot to do and [the day feels] kind of endless. So I just get excited to pop out of bed.
What’s something special about your home that no one knows?
BF: We tore it down to the studs and found—which we framed downstairs—newspapers from the 1800s. It's like, October 11th, 1894, from The New York Herald and those were in the floorboards. We put a newspaper in. If someone does it again in 50 years, it'd be cool to see. Or 100.

What’s your first move when you know you’re not going to be disturbed for a while?
BF: Getting a little nap in. I'm a big napper. I try to nap once a day for 10-15 minutes, wherever I can.

How do you spend your time when no one’s around?
BF: Probably a jazz playlist, some sort of Chet Baker-esque radio. Then I'm drinking a coffee.

What does good design mean to you?
BF: Things that are well made. Just quality, craftsmanship, style, and utility of ease.
What’s something you never thought you’d say about your home?
BF: This place was the [prior apartment of the] rare book curator of Strand Books. The most interesting thing is that I have a rolling ladder library. I never would put that in my future [home] at any point in my life. But, we have one. So here we are.

Why is your bedroom so small?
BF: We ripped this place out and there was no wall here. It could have been any size. I lived in a small bedroom when I came [to New York], which was maybe a little bigger than my [current] bedroom, which is crazy. But I'm super under the impression that you don't need room in a bedroom. You need function. Especially in New York City. You just need [room] to walk around your bed and sleep, essentially.
