Do Not Disturb with Djuna Bel

Presenting Do Not Disturb, a series uncovering the oasis behind closed doors. We’ve been invited to the homes of indoor enthusiasts—and you’re our plus one. In this first installment, stylist Djuna Bel shares a glimpse into her and partner Nikolai Haas’s Highland Park sanctuary, curated by creatives and accentuated by Thuma’s collection.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear “Do Not Disturb?”
DB: A little sanctuary away from the city. We can move up here and nobody will see us.

A cozy bedroom with a neatly made bed, beige sheets, and pillows. A light blanket is draped over the bed. Warm wooden walls, houseplants, and soft natural lighting create a calm, inviting atmosphere.

Two people stand side by side in a modern bathroom, each wrapped in a white towel with another towel wrapped around their head. One wears sunglasses and both are smiling at the camera. Marble countertops and mirrors are visible behind them.

What’s your first move when you know you’re not going to be disturbed for a while?
DB: Nikki likes to take lots of outdoor baths. We use the sauna all the time—it's so refreshing. We're always cooking; or it's more like Nikki that's cooking and I'm like, art directing. Nikki's the chef.

A wooden bench sits by a large window with trees outside. On the bench is a vase with white allium flowers and a stack of books. A mirror behind the bench reflects the scene. Marble accents are visible nearby.

How do you spend your time when no one’s around?
DB: The three of us hanging out, having a really mellow day together.

A man and a woman sit on a bed in a warmly lit room, smiling at each other. The woman wears a bright pink sweater, and the man is in a light-colored shirt. Sunlight streams in from a window behind them.

What does good design mean to you?

DB: Good design is more emotional than physical. I think it’s just like a good outfit. People are always asking me as a stylist what makes a good outfit. And same thing with design. It's really hard to have a backdrop that isn't strong and then just put beautiful pieces in there. Then it can feel like a showroom or something that feels impersonal. But if you really love the configuration of certain things, you don't have to follow a formula, you're just like, I love this.

NH: I think good design is something that solves a problem really well, whether it's emotional or abstract or practical or physical.

What makes your home cool?
DB: It was described as a tree house, which feels really special for Los Angeles. This house is a meeting point of where our styles kind of overlap. I think we've been together for so long that our tastes kind of meshed together a little bit, but we're quite different. This is a fun reflection of where we come together.

How do you wake up in the morning?
DB: My child, who usually comes running into our room and wakes us up.

What happens when you take the “Do Not Disturb” sign down?
DB: A crazy, manic hosting day with tons of people and friends and kids. All that interaction gives [our home] a lot of heart. I think that's kind of the point.
