Premium Furniture That Lasts a Lifetime

In the US, 10 million tons of furniture are thrown out every year as a direct result of limited design, absent craftsmanship, cheap materials, immobility, and disposability. At Thuma, we are committed to creating furniture that never ends up in a landfill. Each piece in our collection is mindfully designed and made with premium materials, with many backed by a lifetime warranty.

Heritage-Quality Furniture

What we bring into our homes matters. Each piece shapes the feel of a space, which shapes our day-to-day living. Well-made furniture—pieces that are high quality, durable, and timeless—both simplifies and enriches life at home. It becomes a lasting foundation, made for a lifetime of use and meant to be passed on.

Key Characteristics of Our Materials

Thuma’s elevated, long-lasting furniture begins with our San Francisco-based studio. Our in-house design team tests and refines every detail, from proportion to construction to material selection.

Durable materials are key to furniture that lasts a lifetime. Solid wood, high-performing fabrics, quality metals, and resilient finishes all contribute to how a piece performs over time. At Thuma, we meticulously select premium, natural, and eco-focused materials that meet the highest quality standards. Our materials include:

  • Solid, upcycled wood: The core material of our collection. It is a premium, stable construction material that is kiln-dried for stability. Its finish is resistant to stains, scratches, and moisture.

  • Performance Textured Weave: An elevated and resilient fabric with a refined texture and soft feel. Woven from performance fibers for durability, longevity, and stain resistance.

  • Italian Wool Felt: A fabric defined by its heathered look, dynamic texture, and cozy hand feel. Crafted in Italy from 100% recycled materials.

  • Performance Linen: Which features an elevated, woven texture and smooth hand feel. Crafted from a blend of performance fibers and natural linen for longevity.

From material selection to overall design, the pieces in our collection are heirloom-quality, intended to be used and cherished for a lifetime and passed on to the next generation.

Materials & Construction Techniques

Engineered wood can be useful in certain non-structural applications, and it is a cheaper alternative to solid wood. When used for furniture, though, it presents a multitude of issues. An engineered wood such as Medium-Density Fiberboard (MDF) absorbs moisture, can contain hazardous chemical binders, and is prone to sagging under heavy loads. Solid wood is the superior choice for load-bearing frames, high-touch surfaces, and pieces used every day. Additionally, its natural wood grain can be stained and it ages with character.

Construction is of equal importance. Joinery, or how parts and pieces are attached, can determine how stable furniture feels after years of use. Metal hardware joints frequently result in a weaker structure over time and come with the potential issue of squeaking and creaking. Items that are meant to withstand everyday use, such as bed frames, seating, and storage, are especially susceptible to noise when metal hardware is utilized.

Thuma utilizes Japanese joinery, a traditional technique that avoids excess metal hardware. Precision pieces simply slide into place, with no tools needed for assembly. This method of joinery is designed for strength, precision, and longevity. Additionally, it creates a cleaner, more considered form.

The best furniture is also adaptable. Modular designs, interchangeable components, and versatile silhouettes allow pieces to move with changing spaces and needs. For city homes, smaller rooms, and evolving routines, flexibility is part of longevity.

Thuma’s Lifetime Warranty

A warranty can be a meaningful indicator of confidence. It confirms a brand’s commitment to materials, construction, and long-term support. Many Thuma pieces are backed by a lifetime warranty, a reflection of our belief that home essentials should be made to endure. Warranty details can be viewed on our Warranty Page.

Essential Furniture Pieces Worth Investing In

When curating a thoughtful home, pieces used most often are worth careful consideration and investment. Bedroom furniture needs to support daily rituals and rest, all while creating a sense of calm. The living room is a high-traffic area where the pieces must be able to withstand everyday use. Slipcovered and upholstered furniture should have durable fabrics with stain-resistant qualities. Thuma’s Bedroom Collection features squeak-free bed frames, soft-close drawers, and intuitive storage. The Living Room Collection includes sofas and sectionals with high-performance fabric options, along with solid wood coffee tables and media consoles. Versatility and flexibility are hallmarks of our collection, with many pieces featuring modular designs and optional upgrades.

Mindful, Sustainable Design

At Thuma, premium design and sustainability go hand in hand. Our products are aesthetically timeless, designed without excess, and intended to stand the test of time. We use innovative materials that are high-quality, durable, and as low-impact as possible. Upcycled wood, the foundation of our collection, is upcycled from trees at the end of their latex-producing lifecycles and sourced close to our makers for a reduced carbon footprint.

In addition to eco-minded material selection, many of our products are GREENGUARD Gold certified. This certification signifies that materials used in the construction have undergone extremely thorough testing for chemicals, including off-gassing VOCs, formaldehydes, and all aldehydes, and have been scientifically proven to meet some of the world’s most rigorous third-party emissions standards. This means cleaner indoor air and a healthier environment for our customers.

Care & Maintenance to Extend Furniture Lifespan

After selecting the perfect pieces for your space, proper care and maintenance are essential to ensure your heirloom-quality furniture stays clean and in good condition.

  • Slipcovered and upholstered furniture: Be sure to clean up spills promptly. Start by soaking up any liquids, and then follow instructions for spot cleaning or dry cleaning. If accessible, cushioning can also be treated directly.

  • Wood pieces: Clean with a soft cloth. Periodically check hardwood for reaction to environmental stressors such as sunlight and moisture. Thuma’s solid wood features a moisture-resistant finish that also protects against scratches and stains. This oil-based stain is designed to age beautifully, but sunlight can cause discoloration to any natural wood and should be managed accordingly.

  • Added protection: Thuma offers a collection of Felt Tops and Felt Liners, meant to protect wood pieces while creating a custom look. These add-ons are compatible with many of our wood products, including storage, shelving, side tables, and nightstands.
